I think when we started playing D&D again and Oldoroth started forming, I really wanted to have like... the ultimate fantasy setting in mind. Obviously everyone loves airships and they add a whole new level of fantasy to most settings anyway. Though, I didn't come up with the airship pilot class until after I had moved and Danny and I discussed a steampunk-type society that existed in the clouds over Oldoroth. I thought this kind of class would be almost necessary to the life of the game, giving people the option to specialize as this sort of character from the beginning and eventually gaining a very broad and I think balanced type of character. The way I viewed the Airship Pilot was a base and prestige class all in one, hence going up to and beyond level thirty. Since being an Airship Pilot is a full time job, those that choose this slowly progressing class are unable to multiclass at all (or even choose another prestige class). I took examples from the Rouge, Fighter, Duelist and Shadowdancer (all found in the Core Rule Book for Pathfinder) to construct this class and took reference that every class in Pathfinder gains something every single level, so was to be true with the Airship Pilot. In fact, it's very easy to see a pattern in the way his abilities are gained and though it seems slow, overall I think it makes him very powerful.
Also, feel free to use this class in your campaign (obviously) and if you make any changes to it, let me know as I'd like to see what you think would make it better.
